Guide for The Outer Worlds (2024)

Radio Free Monarch

Welcome to the feral planet of Monarch! This is where you'll be spending most of your time, mostly doing a very missable faction storyline between our main objectives. When your ship arrives at Stellar Bay, you'll be rewarded with:

  • Something's Fishy

    Reached Stellar Bay.

If you have the Murder on Eridanos DLC installed: Gaining access to the Stellar Bay landing pad will trigger the DLC. ADA will mention that she has a drama ready to watch. A new main quest will appear in the journal, “No Night Without Stars.”

  • To begin this mission talk to ADA and select the dialog choice, “You mentioned an aetherwave drama? I’d like to see it.” The game recommends you be level 30. Nevertheless, if you are playing on Story or Normal modes, it is not challenging even if you are well below that level.
  • You can play the DLC at any time from this point onwards including after completing the base game. Refer to page 13 for a guide to this DLC.

Before you leave your ship, be sure to take Parvati with you; the second companion you pick doesn't matter. Once you're outside, take the lift down and you'll encounter Grimm.

Once you receive your warm welcome, make your way to The Yacht Club where you'll find Nyoka (Companion 6/6).

Talk to her to receive Passion Pills (Companion Quest 7/10). After you complete this, send your second companion back to the ship and you'll unlock:

  • One for All

    Recruited all of the companions.

First thing's first, we're gonna head into our menu and swap out Nyoka's plasma-equipped LMG as our own, and begin using it as a primary weapon for a while, or at least until you get 100 plasma-based kills. Now that you've got Parvati and Nyoka in your party, feel free to scout around town and see who needs to have their quests fulfilled. If you've been interacting with NPCs and doing their missions at a good pace, around now, you should have unlocked:

  • Silver Tongue

Used dialog skills 30 times in conversations.

Once you've played around with those, we're gonna head into the building for Monarch Stellar Industries, your leading faction for this chunk of the game. You'll want to chat up the city's head bureaucrat, Sanjar Nandi.

Talk more with Sanjar to acquire the side quest BOLT with His Name. For now, we're going to be taking a break from the main quest to handle the MSI vs Iconoclast storyline. Now we're going to leave through the Southern exit of Stellar Bay, which will drop you in front of a long walkway facing a small town. Before you go any further, speak to Nyoka to trigger Star-Crossed Lovers (Companion Quest 8/10).

We're not going to do that quest until much later, so don't worry much about it. We're going to head down and make a right into the abandoned town, then look out for a desolate chapel on your left:

Guide for The Outer Worlds (18)

It should look like this on your map:

Guide for The Outer Worlds (19)

Head inside the chapel and walk straight ahead. Behind a podium, you'll find a rather dainty skeleton wearing A Nice Hat.

Guide for The Outer Worlds (20)

Take his hat and keep it in your inventory, as we'll be needing it for a later achievement. Do not sell this top hat.

While you're still in the abandoned town, you can retrieve the BOLT-52 file from a locked-up building on your right side. When you're inside the building, before you go up the stairs to go investigate the girl locked inside the closet, be sure to hack into the terminal and view the logs for Sanjar, Graham, and Dora.

Once you read all three, be sure to pick the [Delete All] option, as this is crucial for gaining Sanjar's trust. Now proceed to the UDL Lab, to this point on your map:

The outside of the lab, for reference:

Guide for The Outer Worlds (23)

Deal with the Marauders both outside and inside. Once inside the lab building, head upstairs and you'll see this keycard lying on a table near a deactivated terminal.

Guide for The Outer Worlds (24)

Pick it up and use this keycard to activate the terminal behind the locked door directly in front of you. Once logged onto it, transfer all files relating to the "Lorem Ipsum" project onto an external tape. If you desire at this point, you can head downstairs and use the keycard to unlock the terminal that's guarding the Gloop Gun science weapon. The answers for the "test" it makes you take are:

  • Protect the Chairman.
  • Berate him relentlessly to defend the Chairman’s honor.
  • Arrest your spouse and admit your children to a reeducation program.

Do not sell this weapon. Once you're all finished up, fast travel back to Stellar Bay and go talk to Sanjar. Give him both the BOLT-52 cartridge and the UDL data cartridge, as both items will turn in BOLT With His Name and Errors Unseen, fulfilling both our MSI missions for this questline in one go.

Now we're going to oblige the second faction, the Iconoclasts, who will give us three quests to max our their faction trust. Leave Stellar Bay through the Southern exit and head left, through the arched rock behind the first building in the abandoned town. For reference, here's the location of Amber Heights on your map:

In-game, the entrance should look something like this:

Guide for The Outer Worlds (26)

Enter the town and you'll be greeted by Rose, a peppy devotee of the Iconoclasts.

Once you've met her, head to a large main building draped by flowery banners and head upstairs, where we'll encounter the faction leaders. Here, you'll encounter Graham Bryant, co-leader and mutton chop extraordinaire.

Midway through the conversation, you'll be introduced to faction co-leader, Zora Blackwood.

Graham will send you on a fetch quest to meet an MSI contact, starting The Commuter. Graham will request more ammo, while Zora will request food and medicine. For the sake of our playthrough, we're going to go with Zora's option.

Head to the waypoint and use Persuade to get the thug outta your way. Make your way to the locked door, where you'll encounter Carlotta.

Make sure to tell her to provide extra food and medicine, as this is paramount to gaining Zora's trust. Head back to turn the mission into Graham, who will next provide you with Pay for the Printer. Now, you'll want to follow the location marker to this point on your map:

Once there, you'll meet the Van Noy twins that Zora inquired about. Speak to May Van Noy.

When the option comes up, tell her that Zora was asking after them and that they should come back to Amber Heights, which will trigger an additional side objective for getting a trauma kit for them. At this point, you might have been offered the Corrosion Weakness flaw. If not, take some damage from the raptidon's acid spit. When its offered, accept it for:

  • Flawed Hero

    Acquired 3 flaws.

After you get the printing press back up and running, kill the raptidons guarding the dead medic, loot his body, and return to May, who will lead her crew back home. Turn in the mission back in Amber Heights.

Shortly after you do, Zora will walk to another building and give you the third and final Iconoclast mission, Sucker Bait. Unlike the other missions, this one doesn't have any additional objectives and is rather straightforward. Head to the abandoned relay station, where you'll encounter several angry mantisaurs, including a Mega Mantisaur. Killing the Mega will earn you a gimme:

  • The Harder They Fall

    Killed a mega creature.

Scour the area and read the terminal inside the building to learn about Graham's rather unsavory past. Head back to Zora to turn it in, and that's it for our Iconoclast missions. We won't come back to this side storyline until after reaching Devil's Peak, where both factions will split our options for loyalty.

Once you arrive at the Devil's Peak station, clear out the hoards of Marauders present, and repeat this step for the info broker once you get inside. After your battle, you'll be greeted by Hiram Blythe, the misanthropic info broker we've been after.

Soon after you begin your conversation, you'll quickly unlock:

  • Pirate Radio

    Stopped the Monarch broadcasts.

After speaking with Hiram and activating the signal outside, we'll get a short cutscene where a flaming UDL gunship comes crashing down to the surface, resulting in a three-way communication between Sanjar, Graham, and Hiram. This will begin the final part of the Monarch storyline, Canid's Cradle. From Hiram's tower, take a back route through several mantisaurs and marauders and head to this point on your map:

Once there, crouch through the gap in the wall and make a right, then curve around the blue wall and you'll see the entrance for an abandoned lobby.

Guide for The Outer Worlds (45)

Head inside and stick to the left, and go all the way back until you're in an office with a terminal. Log into said terminal and be sure to read the file for [Executive Review - BLACKWOOD, ZORA].

Once you've read it, pick the option [Export Executive Review for BLACKWOOD, ZORA to External Datapad], which will put Zora's review in our inventory. Doing so will prove instrumental to the series of events we're about to get into, so please make sure that you don't miss it to save yourself lots of backtracking!

Once you've done this, head across the town to the building with the soda bottles on it.

Guide for The Outer Worlds (47)

Go inside and instead of going upstairs, you'll want to kill the Marauders occupying the building, who will come out of the bar. Head into the barroom and you'll see a terminal, but more importantly, a bag of Ersatz Sweetheart Cakes right next to it!

Pick them up and give them to Parvati, as this will fulfill her Monarch section of Don't Bite The Sun. Yay for foresight. Now that we're done here, head to the large locked door and interact with the terminal to unlock it, granting you access to the bridge. Halfway across the said bridge, enter the booth on your right-hand side to interact with the computer to allow you access to the Northern gate, which will make any future backtracking much easier.

Proceed through the gate and follow the waypoint to the crashed UDL ship, which will be pretty straightforward, besides raptidons and mantisaurs wanting to have you for lunch. Once you've reached the ship, loot the key for the door from one of the dead bodies and you'll enter the room that will give you the power core.

Now that you have it, we're going to fast travel back to Stellar Bay and meet Sanjar. Before speaking to him, make a hard save. Now give him the targeting module, which will declare war on the Iconoclasts and trigger a battle with them. If you've been using Nyoka's plasma LMG faithfully during our adventure throughout Monarch, around this point you should earn:

  • We All Fall Down

Turned 100 enemies to ash with plasma damage.

When you reach the end, Graham and Zora will both be inside the chapel. Kill both of them and any surrounding enemies, and you'll earn:

  • Monarch Abides

Won the battle of Stellar Bay.

Got that outta your system? Good. Now reload the save back to when you were standing in front of Sanjar. Rather than giving him the targeting module, we're going to tell him to consider a truce.

Use these dialogue options on him:

  • Could you agree to a truce with the Iconoclasts?
  • I've read your reviews, Sanjar. You can't do this alone.
  • The people who wrote your reviews are the same type of people you'll deal with on the Board.
  • What about Graham's second-in-command, Zora?
  • I found Zora's review. Here.

With Sanjar in agreeable spirits, all we've got left to do is to go back to Amber Heights. Head back to the main building and Zora will approach you, ready to overthrow Graham. Agree with her and head upstairs, where you'll have a brief conversation with Graham. He'll refuse to leave, and you'll have to kill him if Zora doesn't beat you to it. After this, talk to her and use the following dialogue options:

  • Hold on. I was thinking you and Sanjar could join forces.
  • [Persuade 55] Sanjar has corporate resources you could use to spread the message.
  • I've already spoken to him. He's agreed to meet.

Now fast travel back to the Stellar Bay South exit and make your way to the OSI church, where both parties will be present. Mediate the discussion between the two, picking the most passive/agreeable options available. When the two parties come to an agreement, you'll be rewarded with:

  • Peace in Our Time

Brokered peace between the Iconoclasts and MSI.

And that's that for your first visit on Monarch! Next time we see this place, it'll be to finish up several side quests for our companions and factions. Now head back to your ship and pat yourself on the back for a job well done.
