1. It’s my friend’s, Haley, birthday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HALEY!

2. It’s ThirstyThursday.

3. I feel like surprising Trevor, because it’s almost Valentine’s Day and I feel like doing something cute, as in, I didn’t actually get him anything for Valentine’s Day, sooooo I thought this post and a really great drink could count as something…right? 😉

So what does 1 + 2 + 3 = ? You probably guessed 6, which is almost always correct, but today,it equals an Old Fashioned co*cktail. Even better!

Old Fashioned co*cktail Recipe - Classic Whiskey co*cktail (3)Let’s talk about Haley. Ohhhh Haley. You gotta love her. She’s tall, she’s blonde, and she’s so freakin’ sweet and funny and wears THE cutest clothes (live closer to me, please?)! I’ve known Haley since we were in elementary school and last year she sent me flowers all the way from Iowa for my birthday. It not only brightened my day, but also our insanely dark apartment!

Old Fashioned co*cktail Recipe - Classic Whiskey co*cktail (4)She’s so cute and girly that you’d never guess that her drink of choice is whiskey. When I think of whiskey, I think of manly men sitting around smoking cigars and talking about man things, I definitely don’t think of sweet Haley. She recently got into co*cktail making, so I thought a post about an Old Fashioned co*cktail recipe would be totally appropriate! So again, Happy Birthday, Haley!! This one’s for you!

You know who also really enjoys whiskey? Yep! You guessed it.

Me.

Old Fashioned co*cktail Recipe - Classic Whiskey co*cktail (5)Just kidding. I really don’t like it, it kinda makes me gag a little bit. I tryto enjoy it, but it just doesn’t taste good to me. 😉 Trevor on the other hand really likesan Old Fashioned and I’ll of course order something fruity and girly. I only hope to be as cool as Haley and Trevor some day! 😉

Old Fashioned co*cktail Recipe - Classic Whiskey co*cktail (6)KnowingthatTrevor loves a really good Old Fashioned co*cktail, I thought I could surprise him after work today (I hope he’s not reading this) with an early Valentine’s Day present of a perfectly crafted homemade Old Fashioned co*cktail. It’s just a little surprise, but those are my favorite!

I’m a complete sucker for small surprisesthat hopefully make people feel like I’m thinking of them. A simple text message saying hello to someone I haven’t chatted with in a while, remembering what munchiespeople enjoy when they come over for after work drinks and appetizers, or a favorite co*cktail waiting for Trevor after a long day at work!

There are so many different variations of an Old Fashioned, so take everything I say with a grain of salt! You can easily customize this drink to suit your taste buds. Usually when Trevor orders an Old Fashioned co*cktail, he’ll ask for rye whiskey. Rye is less sweet than say, Bourbon, but today, I only had Bourbon on hand and it still worked beautifully!

Old Fashioned co*cktail Recipe - Classic Whiskey co*cktail (7)Then there’s theangostura bitters. You just needa few dashes to soak your sugar and it adds such a unique and amazing flavor. Typically, I’ve seen people soakingsugar cubes with the bitters, but feel free to use granulated sugar, if that’s what you have on hand!

Now. For the big debate! Trevor’s been served Old Fashioned’s with an orange twist, a muddled orange, with a cherry, without a cherry, a splash of water, a splash of club soda, and even other types of bitters added! Purist will probably hunt me down for this, but today, we’re using an orange twist and a cherry! The guys that are really serious about Old Fashioned’s will say to muddle a cube of sugar with the bitters, place an ice cube in the glass, top with rye, give it a quick stir and wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am! But I’m making what I think Trevor will like. 🙂

Nowtake a fresh orange peel – use a vegetable peeler to do this, gently twist(that will release the oils), and place in the glass. Stir, garnish with a cherry, and enjoy!

A classic recipe that is enjoyed by many (and hopefully me, too, in the near future), an Old Fashioned co*cktail is a great drink any time!

Old Fashioned co*cktail Recipe - Classic Whiskey co*cktail (9)Cheers to Haley and Trevor! Love you both 🙂
