Grilled BBQ Pork and Beef Meatballs are topped with crispy onions and served in sweet Hawaiian hot dog buns in this scrumptious Meatball Sub recipe!
Growing up, I loved to put BBQ sauce on everything! Maybe it was the sweetness of the sauce, or maybe the fact that I grew up in the south, but either way, I lovedit!
Two of my favorite things to put BBQ sauce on were hamburgers and onion rings, so I combined these two in my latest meatball sub recipe!
The combination of soft, sweet Hawaiian rolls, rich, hearty meatballs, thick, sweet BBQ sauce and crispy, saltyonions is definitely a winner!
BBQ Meatball Sub Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 lb ground pork
- ½ cup red onion (minced)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp Kosher salt
- 1 tsp dark brown sugar
- ½ tsp ground cumin
- ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
- ¼ tsp mustard powder
- 1 egg (whisked)
- 1 cup BBQ sauce (divided)
- 8sweet Hawaiian hot dog buns
- 1 cup crispy onions
BBQ Meatball Sub Instructions
Preheat the grill to medium. Combine the ground beef, ground pork, red onion and garlic in a large bowl.
Add the chili powder, paprika, kosher salt, brown sugar, cumin, black pepper, mustard powder, egg, and ½ cup BBQ sauce.
Combine all of the ingredients, then form into 16 meatballs.
Place the meatballs on the grill. Grill for 6-8 minutes, flip, then grill for an additional 6-8 minutes. About 3 minutes before removing the meatballs from the grill, place the hot dog buns on the grill to lightly toast.
Remove the buns and meatballs from the grill and place 2 meatballs on each bun.
Top with the crispy onions and drizzle the additional BBQ sauce over the top.
One of the reasons I love this recipe is because it’s easily preparedin 30 minutes, making it perfect for weeknight dinners, as well as weekend BBQs!
